Project 2 | Sense of place

Lectures

I couldn't join most of the lecture because of a technical issues I faced.

Learning outcome

Thanks to the videos that the lecturer posted on TIMES, I was able to understand the content of the lecture.
As designers we should improve our observation skills, it is key for more productivity and creativity.
After going through the videos I decided to become more sensitive about details in my surroundings.

Instructions

Reference and inspiration

I think the best way to express sense of surroundings is by taking pictures of what I mostly see and make a collage artwork.
I gathered some artworks as reference.

As you can see in the images above, the artist tried to express a certain theme using different pictures.

My surroundings

I spend most of my time sitting next to my desk doing assignments and projects. Here are some images of my studying table and surroundings.

Fig 2.5
my studying table
Because I care too much about details, I try to keep my workspace as clean as possible, also aesthetically pleasing, so I don't get bored or distracted while studying.

Fig 2.6
my chair
I always notice the pattern on my chair.

Fig 2.7
Thor
This was a gift from a friend, whenever I look at it I remember all the good times we had together.

Book
I started reading to improve my English since I was quarantined for a long time. Reading now became a daily task for me.
Will be used for the background

Fig 2.11
this chair means a lot to me, I used to sit here with a wonderful person who is living far away now due to this pandemic.

Fig 2.12
Fig 2.13
My flat is lacking green color, sometimes I feel the need to see plants and flowers.
Whenever I'm free, I go to the rooftop garden and do some meditation. I like nature and outdoors, but since we're in lock-down I go to that garden instead.

Fig 2.14
Balcony
I always go to the balcony to have some fresh air after spending long hours studying.

Ideas
the overall Idea is to make a collage artwork using all the pictures I took.
  • I'll make a collage using the pictures I took, the collage will be messy and not symmetrical as in Fig 2.1 and 2.2.
  • making a Polaroid photo collage same as Fig 2.3, with a background (book pages)
  • making a collage using symmetrical diamond shapes as in Fig 2.4.
  • tracing my face then fill the silhouette with pictures.
I will add more pictures to the final work, images of things I usually notice and use, that have a meaning to me.

Final design

Final work
Description
Specific description

Every single image in that design represents a meaning to me, a memory, a feeling or an activity I do regularly.

At the top I added a picture of a book I'm reading which say "Homeless",because I feel homeless, far away from my family and beloved ones, home is not a house, it's family, love and warmth.

I wore that bandanna you see in every single hike and camp and trip I did In the past few years, for me it means outdoors and travel.

Also the converse backpack, which was a gift. I had it for a long time, I always carry it wherever I go.

I used to sit on that chair with a really special person which is far away from me no because of the pandemic, whenever I sit on that chair I start remembering all the good memories I had with that person which makes me smile and feel happy.

The Thor figure was a gift also from a friend, I placed it on my studying table, I always recall that person whenever I see that figure.

I added a random page of a novel I'm reading which is a daily task I'm committed to do because I wanted to read books so bad and I always found it difficult to finish a book.

You can also see the wallpaper of my bedroom, It's something I always see. I keep staring at it while I'm thinking about creating something new.

Finally, my studying table, the place I spend the most of my time in. I sit for long hours doing projects and different assignments.

General description

The overall idea behind this design is that I feel homesick, I don't belong in here no matter how long I live here, this will never be my home, despite this fact, I can't deny that I had such wonderful memories here. I met amazing people that left things so that make me remember them.

Week 9 Via Telegram messages

At this stage of Project 2, I noticed that you have some pictures of your room. In the blog, describe what each of those space/objects mean to you. Maybe venture a little further - the living room, the porch, the kitchen but if you are stepping beyond your living space, DO STAY SAFE (wear mask and sanitize your hands). This project is about your interpretation of a place so take as many meaningful pictures of places/spaces as you can (even past pictures are acceptable) and explain what they mean to you. Also observe what kind of design principles they may have. After that, come up with ideas of how you interpret them visually.
